Bird sanctuary at Bundala (264km) between Hambantota and Thissamaharama is the roosting place for the large number of migratory birds. Flamingos, Painted Storks, Egrets, Herons, Spoonbills, Pelicants and a wild range of other bird of species frequent this wildness.

This is a unique area of 6216 hectares with a thorny scrub jungle with a very sandy sea border. Even though the climate is hot and dry, it is home to a total of 383 plant species, 32 different species of animals and approximately 197 species of birds. This is also the home to spotted deer, the rare pangolin and the playful grey langur monkey.
