Maadu River is very attractive and popular in Sri Lanka. It is situated in and around Balapitiya in the Southern Province within the Wet zone of Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka. It is approximately 34km North West of the Galle city. Maadu Estuary is perhaps one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka, with a rich biodiversity. A notable mangrove type identified in this area is Rathamilla, wet zone small glabrous mangrove. The plants found there included 19 endemics and total of 247 species of vertebrate fauna belonging 121 families had been recorded from the area.
Maadu rivers offers a great opportunity for boat trips where you can arrange to stop at temples, cinnamon estates and other nature resorts.
