This is a large scale practice in the south using varies types of wood – hard and soft. Although different kinds of hard and soft wood are used to carve out various objects, the most famous are the ebony carvings. The ebony elephants are synonymous with the Southern wood carving. Originally made for puppet performances they are now made to be sold as souvenirs to tourists as well. It is practice as a family business with the males making the puppet heads and the female doing up the costumes.
